Nottingham, UK, May 26, 2011 -- Justine Drury and Kate Vines, who will swim the Channel as a female relay this summer, have helped to launch the BBC ‘The Big Splash’ campaign, “inspiring the UK to swim”.

Channeling Positivity (http://www.channelingpositivity.com/) is the name of the ladies’ swimming challenge. The two will attempt to swim the Channel this July, and as such, hope to become the first female relay duo from Nottingham to do so. They are raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust appeal (http://www.justgiving.com/channelingpositivity) in the East Midlands and their campaign is sponsored by South Nottingham College (http://www.snc.ac.uk/channelingpositivity/default.asp).

The BBC has been working closely with the national governing body, British Swimming, to launch a mass new participation called the “Big Splash”. Throughout the year the BBC will highlight swimming as an important life-skill and gateway to a host of fun activities through a range of well known programmes across TV, radio and online. British Swimming is working also with local swimming pools to offer a range of activities and resources to help get the nation swimming. This is all in a bid to get the UK fitter and more active ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Justine Drury, staff member half of the duo, said “It was absolutely amazing to be part of such a huge campaign from the very beginning. Our video appears alongside the likes of great swimmers such as Ian Thorpe on the website, which is a huge honour for us. The Big Splash is a brilliant campaign – anything that gets people swimming more is totally worthwhile – and it’s already working; we’ve had lots of comments from all kinds of people saying that they feel inspired to get back in the water.”

The Teenage Cancer Trust is dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults with cancer. Earlier this year the charity launched a local campaign to build special wards for young cancer sufferers in hospitals in the East Midlands.

About Us:
The Channeling Positivity duo, Justine Drury and Kate Vines are hoping to become the first female relay team from Nottingham to complete the channel swim. The swim can be anywhere between 19 and 33 miles long depending on the tide and shipping lanes. The pair were inspired by the Olympics and have therefore scheduled to begin the swim a year to the day until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

South Nottingham College offers a range of further and higher education courses and training; including full time and part time course which are available weekday, evening and weekends. The college provides this across five sites within the Nottingham area: Bingham, Charnwood, Clifton, Ruddington & West Bridgford.
